Trauma-informed therapy

What is trauma-informed therapy?

Trauma can hurt you psychologically and shape how you feel, think and respond to everyday situations.

Trauma-informed therapy recognises how past experiences affect your present. It looks at the whole story behind your reactions and offers a supportive space to work through them.

Trauma-informed therapy:

Recognises that experiences such as abuse, neglect, chronic stress, discrimination, medical trauma or neurodiversity-related challenges can influence wellbeing

Acknowledges how trauma can affect the brain, nervous system and emotional responses

Focuses on creating safety, predictability and trust in each session

Supports individuals to understand triggers and strengthen emotional regulation

Moves at your pace without rushing

Methods such as trauma cognitive behavioural therapy can help you make sense of how trauma has shaped your thoughts and behaviour and support the development of healthier, more stabilising patterns.

Our telehealth psychologists use this approach to provide compassionate, evidence-informed care tailored to each person’s needs.

How is trauma-informed therapy different?

Trauma-informed therapy differs from traditional therapy by placing trauma assumptions at the centre of care.

We aim to help you feel understood rather than judged, acknowledging that many emotional and behavioural patterns are adaptive responses to past experiences.

Trauma-informed therapy techniques may include:

Grounding strategies

Psychoeducation

Emotional regulation skills

Exploration of personal strengths

This approach can be particularly valuable if you have felt misunderstood in past therapeutic settings or have had difficulty discussing your experiences due to fear, shame or sensory overwhelm.

Who can benefit from trauma-informed therapies?

Trauma-informed therapy may be helpful if you:

Have survived life-threatening danger, serious accidents, sexual assault or domestic violence

Have lived through war or displacement

Have experienced neglect, bullying or interpersonal conflict

Face traumatic situations at work, e.g. in the armed forces or emergency services

Live with the emotional effects of childhood adversity

Face ongoing stressors related to identity, discrimination or marginalisation

Experience neurodiversity-related overwhelm or sensory challenges

Have a history of medical trauma or chronic health needs

Are living with the long-term emotional imprint of grief, fear or instability

Who can benefit from trauma-informed therapies

Many people seek trauma-informed therapies not because of a single traumatic event, but because they notice patterns that feel connected to past experiences, such as emotional intensity, difficulty regulating stress, relationship challenges or physical tension.

Trauma-informed therapy provides language, structure and support to understand these patterns in a validating, non-pressuring environment.

Review and progress

Therapy is reviewed regularly, adjusting techniques and goals as your needs evolve. Many individuals find that online trauma therapy offers flexibility and consistency, helping them integrate strategies into daily life.

Why choose telehealth for trauma therapy?

Telehealth trauma therapy offers several benefits:

Access to qualified psychologists from the comfort of your home

Reduced travel or scheduling barriers

A private, calm environment that supports trauma-sensitive work

Continuity of care even during busy or unpredictable periods.

Online trauma therapy can feel less confronting and more accessible, allowing you to engage with therapeutic work at a manageable pace.

It’s also much easier to look after yourself after your appointment. You don’t need to ‘pull yourself together’ and drive home. You can simply snuggle up on your sofa for a bit until you feel ready to re-engage with your day.
